APFE Takes Final Bow in Park City for 22nd Edition
By Milton Liu & Laarni Rosca Dacanay
Bittersweet and celebratory, the Asian Pacific Filmmakers Experience (APFE) hosted its 22nd and final Park City edition on Sunday, January 25, 2026, during the opening weekend at the Sundance Film Festival. At Alpine Distilling, APFE honored 34 Asian, Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander films, closing a remarkable chapter while spotlighting our voices leading cinema forward.
Thank you to our 22nd Edition Partners, Center for Asian American Media (CAAM), Visual Communications, International Cultural Arts Network (ICAN), Tunnel Post, Edward Lew, and A-DOC. None of this would be possible without them.
Thank you to everyone who came out to a cold Park City and filled the room with warm inspiration. Thank you to the entire APFE team for your tireless (volunteer) work to bring the Final Edition to life. Thank you Summer Prescott, Carey Ofahengaue, Charlie Prescott, and the entire Savage Fish team for the delicious poke and lumpia. Thank you Andrew Ge for capturing the moments so beautifully. Thank you also to the ACV volunteers. Thank you to Raina Yang, Mynette Louie, David Magdael, The Population, and David Magdael & Associates, for producing the memorable slideshow of noted AANHPI films throughout the past 22 years. And last but not least, thank you to Sara Sergent, Xania Woodman, and the entire Alpine Distilling staff for the incredible hospitality!
Welcome
The event kicked off with a welcome from the APFE Organizing Leaders: Asian American Media Alliance, CAPE (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment), David Magdael & Associates, Kollaboration, Laarni Rosca Dacanay, and Visual Communications – whose longstanding collaboration has shaped APFE into a cornerstone gathering for AANPHI storytellers. David Magdael reflected on APFE’s origin at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival during the premiere of Justin Lin’s BETTER LUCK TOMORROW, one of the first Asian American-directed films showcased at the iconic festival. “I was here in 2002 and this room didn’t look like this. We’re here to celebrate you and our stories,” Magdael reflected.
